LEARN TO SKATE PROGRAM

The Learn To Skate program is designed for a beginning skater with little or no skating experience.  This program is for boys and girls ages 4 years of age and older who would like to learn to skate.  We will teach forward skating, turning, stopping and some backward skating in our 6-week session.  All sessions are 1 hour long and will have 30 minutes of instruction along with 30 minutes of free skating.  All sessions will be on Saturday mornings with varied times usually starting around 9:00 am, but no later than 11:30 am.  The only equipment required is a helmet (Ice Hockey Helmet with cage is preferred) and a pair of gloves.  Extra padding is optional (knee pads, elbow pads, padded pants), but highly recommended.  Ice skates are available at the rink.  Once the participant completes the program, the individual may advance to our "Learn to Play Hockey" Program with approval of the instructor.

RECREATIONAL HOCKEY 8 AND UNDER PROGRAM

The Lawrence Flames "Recreational Hockey U8" Program is offered to all skaters 8 years of age and under who have completed our Learn To Skate Program or who can already skate forward.  Recreational Hockey will focus on developing skating and hockey skills to prepare players for more advanced levels, like the Lawrence Flames Travel Hockey Program.  Our Recreational Hockey Program is designed to teach the basic skills and rules of Ice Hockey in a relaxed and fun environment.  The program consists of skating, puck handling, passing and shooting with the use of various types of cross-ice scrimmages.  Our Coaches are USA Hockey trained and certified, and follow the training guidelines offered by USA Hockey.  Practices and scrimmages build progressively throughout the season, moving the players along a path of continued skill development.  Each "Practice" is 1 hour long and will occur on most Saturday and/or Sunday mornings.  There will be approximately 25 practices/scrimmages, which will start in October and end in March.  All practices and scrimmages will be played at The Lawrenceville School Loucks Ice Skating Rink.  This program offers enrollment at all times throughout the season.

TRAVEL TEAMS

The Lawrenceville Travel Teams compete under the banner of the Lawrence Flames in the New Jersey Youth Hockey League (NJYHL). The NJYHL is comprised of about 33 hockey clubs located throughout New Jersey, and Rockland County, New York. The NJYHL is Zone 3 of the Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association (Atlantic District) of USA Hockey.

The Travel Hockey Player will typically have 2 practices per week.  There will be split practices (shared with another team) and solo practices.  Practices are on weeknights beginning in August.  Typically, there are two games each weekend. The League season begins in October and ends in February, except for Midgets, who will start in September and end in November, with playoffs in January.  Half of the games are anticipated to be at home, half away.  The average travel time to games from the Lawrenceville School is 1 hour and the maximum is 2 hours.  League play will not utilize all of your team's games.  Non-league games will be swapped (home and home) by the team managers, typically with non-league teams.  The scheduling of non-league games, and therefore determination of opponents, is left entirely to the individual teams’ coaches and managers.  Travel teams participate in tournaments, typically two to three.  The fee includes the entry fee for 1-2 tournaments, depending on the cost of the tournaments.  Midgets will enter 3 showcase tournaments.  Parents are responsible for all travel expenses.  Teams may decide to enter additional tournaments and the individual teams are responsible for those entry fees.
